When it comes to the oldest and most ancient sex toy, the all-time favorite is of course the dildo. It’s been around for hundreds of years, and is still going strong today. Well, that answer is actually a bit tricky. To date, there hasn’t been any concrete evidence to prove when the first dildo was produced. But, according to most experts and historians, the oldest known dildo dates back to around 15,000 BC, vibrators making it one of the oldest sex toys on the planet. It was discovered in Germany and is thought to have been made from reindeer antler, which was used to make the shaft and handle.
Interestingly, some of the earliest written mentions of dildos date back to ancient Greek and Roman times. The earliest written reference to a dildo was actually in the Greek play ‘Lysistrata’, which was written by playwright and poet Aristophanes in 411 BC. Furthermore, around 161 BC, archaeologists found a 6-inch-long conical dildo made from black stone in a mausoleum in Saqqara, Egypt.
But perhaps the most interesting thing about the history of the dildo is that it was actually once used as a medical device. In the 16th century, German physician Georg Wyrm used dildos to treat ‘hysteric paroxysm’ in women, which is the female equivalent of a male orgasm. The dildos were made from sponge or wood and soaked in vinegar. The theory was that the vinegar would increase the absorption of the dildo into the patient’s body, which would then help alleviate her hysteria.
Modern dildos have come a long way since then, with revolutionary advances in materials, manufacturing processes, designs, colors and shapes. But, that doesn’t take away from the history of the dildo. It’s amazing to think that this classic sex toy has been around for hundreds of thousands of years, and is considered by some to be a key part of human culture.
